Some people apply antiperspirant, get dressed, and head out for the day without thinking much more about sweating. If you have hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating, however, underarm sweat and odor may be on your mind much of the time. If you want to make this condition a thing of the past, miraDry® can help. This long-lasting hyperhidrosis treatment has changed the lives of many people who struggle with this frustrating problem.

What is miraDry® for Hyperhidrosis?

Underarm sweating can affect your life in many ways. Not only does this area have a high concentration of sweat glands, but the sweat they produce causes more odor than sweat on other parts of the body. At Krauss Dermatology, we offer miraDry®, the noninvasive FDA-cleared hyperhidrosis treatment that destroys sweat glands using microwave energy.

Does miraDry® Treat Hyperhidrosis Permanently?

The biggest problem with most hyperhidrosis treatments is that they are temporary. Botox®, for example, can be very effective, but requires injections several times a year. With miraDry®, many people will experience lasting relief with a single session, while others may require a second one for maximum results. Your results can provide a lifetime of sweat and odor control with no maintenance required.

As an added benefit of miraDry®, it also treats the hair follicles located in the area, producing a lasting reduction in underarm hair. Like sweat glands, hair follicles do not regenerate after treatment.

What to Expect During a miraDry® Treatment

When you arrive for your session, your Krauss Dermatology provider will clean the area and map it out with a grid that allows them to treat each area with a precise amount of energy. The area is numbed with lidocaine injections performed by our board certified dermatologists and kept comfortable with miraDry®’s cooling system which also protects the epidermis from harm. Treatment takes about an hour to an hour and a half.

Is There Any Downtime After miraDry®?

While you can return to light activities after miraDry®, your underarm area will feel sensitive and swollen. Most people will feel most comfortable if they return home for the rest of the day and apply towel-wrapped ice packs to the area. Ice will also help swelling resolve more quickly, and most people feel back to normal within days. Some lingering tenderness and some irregular lumps and bumps can occasionally take longer to resolve.  Your miraDry® team will give you more detailed instructions.

Am I a Good Candidate for miraDry®?

You do not need a diagnosis of hyperhidrosis to benefit from miraDry®. Almost anyone bothered by underarm sweat and odor can be a good candidate. A few conditions would limit you from having this treatment, including scarring disorders (keloid formation), and medical implants like pacemakers. Candidates for miraDry® should have realistic expectations as the procedure only works in the underarm area, although most are very satisfied with their results.
