Winter is officially here – and that means our heat is cranked in our homes, static electricity is in the air, and our skin is desperate for moisture.

Dry skin can be pretty common – especially during the cold winter months – but it can also be annoying, if not downright painful. Cracking, peeling skin can hurt; plus, dry skin can rob us of our radiant and glowing complexion, making it tough to feel good about our complexions during the winter.

So how can you get rid of dry skin? Easy – let Krauss Dermatology show you how.

Easy Steps to Get Rid of Dry, Cracked Skin

1. Use a fragrance-free moisturizer.

Fragrance in skincare products can be a major irritant, meaning your dry skin will feel even worse when you use it. To make sure your skincare products don’t have fragrance, check to see where “fragrance” sits on the product’s ingredient list. Ideally, it won’t show up at all, so if you see it in a product’s ingredients list, it might be worth looking for a “fragrance-free” formula.  Our favorites are Avene Xeracalm Balm or Eucerin Eczema Relief Balm.

2. Turn down the hot water.

It’s cold out, so it makes sense we’ll spend a little more time in a hot shower. But as far as your skin’s concerned, all that hot water is robbing it of moisture, causing it to become dry and itchy. To avoid that sensation, turn down the water’s temperature to a more lukewarm level.

3. Use a glycolic body lotion.

Glycolic acid is an excellent compound for sloughing away dry skin flakes, leaving behind smoother, radiant-looking and more drought resistant skin. Find a glycolic acid lotion that works to moisturize as it helps reveal your best skin ever.  Our favorite is Glytone Exfoliating Body Lotion.

4.Try hydrocortisone ointment.

If your skin is still dry and itchy, try using hydrocortisone ointment (not cream) twice a day for a week or two to get rid of the itch. It can soothe away dry irritated skin while getting rid of the itchy sensation, which can be caused by the dry skin.

5.Use a moisturizing body wash

We love Avene XeraCalm moisturizing body wash which has anti-itch ingredients but is steroid free.  Runner up is Eucerin Skin Calming Wash in a bright yellow bottle.
