For years, Botox® was the world’s wonder treatment for expression lines and wrinkles. Today, however, you have several alternatives that work as well or even better than Botox® to help you achieve your relaxed, youthful look. Dysport® and Xeomin® work in the same basic way, but they have a few differences that might make one better than the other for your unique needs. New Daxxify® also gives us new options in our choice of neuromodulators.

What are Dysport® and Xeomin®?

Dysport® and Xeomin® are injectable treatments that use botulinum toxin as their active ingredient. This compound works by targeting facial nerves that tell muscles to contract. When these nerves stop sending signals, the muscle relaxes, and the overlying skin becomes smooth and even. While both treatments are FDA-approved and thoroughly tested, each has a few unique properties. At Krauss Dermatology, all neuromodulator injections are performed by our board-certified dermatologists, who will choose the best one for you.

What They Treat

Dysport® and Xeomin® are used to treat concerns similar to those treated with Botox®, including facial lines and wrinkles, and for medical purposes, including muscle spasms. Because Dysport® tends to spread out more, it may be preferred for areas like the forehead, where this is a benefit.  Daxxify® can sometimes feel a bit heavier when used in horizontal forehead lines, so the areas to be treated, and what toxin to use should be reviewed carefully with a dermatologist.

Other Differences

People with milk allergies (not lactose intolerance) should not have Dysport® but can still have Xeomin® and other neuromodulators.

Is There Any Downtime With Dysport® and Xeomin®?

These injectable treatments do not require any downtime, and you can return to your daily routine immediately. Avoid rubbing your face and wait till the next day to resume strenuous workouts. Some people notice minor redness, bruising, or swelling in the injection area that fades within a day or two.

Dysport® vs. Xeomin®: What’s the Difference?

While both products use botulinum toxin as the ingredient that smooths lines and wrinkles, the other ingredients affect their properties. Dysport®, like Botox®, uses accessory proteins that help the botulinum toxin reach its destination. Xeomin®, sometimes called the “naked” injectable, is a purified botulinum toxin without the bulky proteins used by other treatments. Daxxify® also uses a smaller protein as its carrier molecule than Dysport® and Botox®.

How Fast They Work

While it varies by individual, Dysport® and Daxxify®, get to the nerves and take effect faster, often within 24 to 48 hours as opposed to a few more days for Dysport®.

How Long They Last

Like Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin® injectable treatments last three to four months for most people but longer in others. Some people may see longer-lasting results with one option over another depending on how their body responds. People who have been getting botulinum toxin injections for a while can see results a bit longer. Daxxify® may last approximately 50% longer in about half of patients treated so is worth a try if a short duration with other neuromodulators is disappointing.

It was a great experience. Lauren was very thorough.
