What Is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an inflammatory condition that speeds up skin cell production causing red, scaly plaques on the skin. Overactive white blood cells interact with the epidermal cells causing thickening primarily on the elbows, knees, scalp, back, face, palms, and feet. Psoriasis can affect the joints causing arthritis and can also cause nail changes. More than 1% of the population suffers from psoriasis and involvement can vary from a small amount of skin involvement to severe involvement and disability.  Recently it was discovered that patients with psoriasis have an increased risk of cardiac disease.

There are various types of psoriasis which can be diagnosed during a physical exam with a skilled dermatologist. In some cases, your dermatologist may perform a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.
