If you have fine lines and wrinkles, you may look aged and tired even though you feel young and awake. Botox is a non-invasive treatment that has been approved for the treatment of frown lines between the brows since 2002 and for the crows feet area since 2013.  Botox relaxes the muscles that cause the furrows, smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles to restore your youth.

At Krauss Dermatology, we have helped many patients achieve smoother looking skin through Botox. If you have wrinkles around your eye and look like you haven’t slept in a while, you may be wondering whether it’s safe to treat them with Botox. Let’s dive deeper into the answer to this very common question.

How Botox Works

Botox, as well as other brands Dysport and Jeuveau,  are brands of purified botulinum toxin. They work by blocking muscular signals that cause wrinkles. This action not only helps smooth overlying skin but also can help lift the brows by removing the downward pull of frown and squint muscles. Botox is even used by neurologists for the treatment of migraine headaches triggered by muscle movements. Some compelling studies show improvement of mood and depression with Botox injections and studies are underway to support this.

A Botox injection usually lasts three months or longer. Many patients find that it lasts six months or more with continued use. Lifestyle habits will play a vital role in how long Botox lasts with some studies showing high-level athletes metabolize Botox more quickly.

Is Botox Safe?

It’s very safe to use Botox for wrinkles in the FDA approved areas of the forehead, crows feet, and frown lines. Off label use on the nose (bunny lines), upper lip, golf ball chin, and vertical neck bands are also safe when performed by a skilled dermatologist.

Botox is backed by the FDA and is a safe and effective medication. In fact, over 3.5 million Botox injections are performed in the United States each year. Botox is a purified protein that does not contain any live bacteria.

Good Candidates for Botox

If you’d like to reduce your facial wrinkles with no downtime, you may benefit from Botox. Since Botox does not require an allergy test like many injectable treatments, you are likely a good candidate if you’re in generally good health. Patients who begin their Botox treatments before age 65 generally due best. Botox can also help younger patients who would like to prevent lines from appearing in the first place.

You may not be treated with Botox if you are pregnant or nursing, have a neuromuscular disease or are taking aminoglycoside medications like Streptomycin or Neomycin.
