It can be frustrating to deal with premature hair loss or thinning hair. After all, when you’re displeased with the appearance of your hair, you may feel insecure and look older than you really are. That’s where platelet-rich plasma or PRP comes in. Below, we’ll dive deeper into how PRP can help with hair loss.

What is PRP?

Plasma is a part of your blood that contains platelets which help your blood to clot. Platelets also contain proteins that promote cell growth. When you isolate plasma from your blood and concentrate  it, you have PRP. Injecting PRP into damaged tissues can stimulate your body to grow healthy new cells and stimulate healing naturally.

How PRP for Hair Loss Works

With PRP for hair loss, most patients can grow thicker, fuller hair without having to undergo surgery or put up with major downtime. The treatment involves a blood draw from your arm into a special tube designed for this process. The blood is placed into a centrifuge so red blood cells are separated from plasma and then further concentrated to contain high quantities of platelets.

PRP is injected directly into the thinning area of the scalp. The PRP platelet proteins stimulate hair growth from follicles that have become smaller or dormant, causing both more hairs to grow, and existing hairs to become thicker and healthier.

PRP For Hair Loss Consultations Available

For optimal results, you’ll likely need three monthly treatments and then a 4th treatment 3 months later. We’ll encourage you to return to our office every 6 months so you can maintain your results. Although there is no downtime with PRP for hair loss, you should avoid vigorous exercise as well as any dyes, chemicals or swimming for 24 hours.

Good Candidates for PRP for Hair Loss

We highly recommend this treatment if you are noticing thinning hair or a receding hairline. Treatment works best if started early in the hair loss process and does not work well once the loss is severe. PRP for hair loss is not a good option if you’re taking blood thinners or other medication that affects blood or platelets.
