Summer is here at last – and now that we’re able to go out and enjoy more activities, it may be time to start thinking about your hair removal regimen again.

If you don’t want to constantly have to bother with shaving or waxing – or you just want to go about your day without worrying if you missed a spot while shaving – it may be time to consider laser hair removal treatments.

Let’s take a closer look at how laser hair removal works, including how to tell if laser hair removal is right for you.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal works by transmitting heat energy to the roots of the hair follicles; when these follicles heat up, they damage the ability for the follicle to produce a hair.  If the hair does recur it is finer, lighter and slower growing, but most follicles are destroyed.

Most people need five to twelve laser hair removal treatments to see their ideal results. Some areas like lower legs take more treatments due to the particular hair cycle in that area, where the bikini area may take less treatments.  Facial hair is under hormonal control, so even if the laser is successful, hormonal stimulation may cause new hairs to appear over time.  So longer term maintenance may be necessary in this area.

Signs You’re a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal

  • You’re tired of shaving or waxing unwanted hair – you’d rather spend your time doing something else!
  • You have unwanted hair in a hard to reach area, like your back.
  • You are tired of razor burn and ingrown hairs.
  • You’re willing to commit to a laser hair removal regimen to see your ideal results.
  • You have medium-to-light skin tone and dark, coarse-to-regular body hair.
  • You are willing to protect the treated area from the sun both before and after hair removal treatments.

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost?

At Krauss Dermatology, small areas (like the chin and armpits) cost about $150 per treatment, and larger areas such as the back and legs are over $350 per treatment depending on the size of the area.

You do not have to commit to a pricey package, and can pay one procedure at a time giving you ultimate flexibility.

How to Prepare for Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

The best way to prepare for your laser hair removal treatment is to:

  • Shaving hair in the targeted area 2 days before your treatment is optimal (avoid the day before).
  • Protect your skin from sun exposure in the month before and after your session, as we can’t perform the treatment on recently tanned skin as burning can occur.
  • Don’t wear any lotions or creams on the targeted treatment area on the day of your session except for 4% or 5% over-the-counter lidocaine cream.
