When you think of signs of aging, you might think of lines and wrinkles. However, volume loss also occurs, making your features look hollow or sagging. Dermal fillers offer an effective way to address facial volume loss without surgery. These injectable treatments are a low-risk way to achieve youthful volume and definition.

What Causes Facial Volume Loss?

Facial volume loss affects almost everyone as they age. Your fat distribution changes as part of aging, leading to volume loss. At the same time, your skin levels of collagen and elastin decrease, resulting in skin laxity, lines, and wrinkles. Fat pads may shrink or descend (cheeks become jowls!).  Even our bony skeleton changes giving less structure to the areas around the eyes and mouth.  Hyaluronic acid fillers provide anti-aging results by replacing lost facial volume as well as smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. A wonderful aspect of these hyaluronic acid fillers is their ability to be reversed safely and easily to correct any small irregularities that may rarely occur, or even to reverse the entire filler should there be a need or desire to do so.

How Can I Treat Facial Volume Loss?

At Krauss Dermatology, we offer three brands of dermal fillers that provide facial volume restoration. They use hyaluronic acid, the most widely used and tested dermal filler material, as their building blocks. Hyaluronic acid also holds moisture in the skin, adding natural-looking volume and shape. The formulation of each filler allows us to have different consistencies for particular uses.  Thicker fillers mimic cheek bones and jawlines, medium consistency fillers feel like the natural fat pads they augment, and fine fillers allow us to make changes to erase fine and etched in lines.

Juvederm®

This family of hyaluronic acid fillers includes members like Juvederm® Voluma and Volux. Juvederm® Voluma is designed to restore lost volume to the cheek, chin and jawline area. It provides volume and definition. Volux takes this a degree further adding structural integrity to a sagging jawline.  Both of these fillers are the longest lasting hyaluronic acid fillers available today with results often lasting 2 years.  Ultra and Ultra Plus are great in medium depth wrinkles and folds such as the depression from nose to corner of mouth (nasalabial folds) and from mouth to chin (marionette lines).

Restylane®

The Restylane® family of fillers features Restylane® Lyft to restore lost cheek or jawline volume or fill deeper lines. It is particularly helpful in treating male patients with thicker skin.  Other members of this family treat lines, wrinkles, and other concerns, including Restylane L and the popular lip filler Restylane® Kysse.

Revance RHA®

The RHA® line was designed to give a natural correction and enhancement to mobile areas of the face.  The RHA Redensity line has transformed the way we treat fine lip lines, and smile lines on the cheeks.  Its finesse and smooth result have made it one of the most popular fillers in our practice.  RHA 2 and RHA3 are great for slightly less fine fine lines and also for natural lip enhancement.  RHA4 enhances cheeks and jawline in a soft, natural way.

What Results Will I See With Dermal Fillers?

Dermal filler results are usually visible immediately, although they will improve over the next few days. Most hyaluronic acid fillers last between one and two years. Lip fillers are usually the shortest-lasting, while cheek and jawline fillers typically last the longest. Help your results last longer with quality skincare products and avoidance of sun exposure.

Is There Any Downtime With Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers usually require no downtime. Most people return to their daily routine immediately. You might notice minor swelling or bruising around the injection area, but this will fade within a few days. Swelling can make your cheeks look slightly fuller for the first day or two, so allow your results to evolve for a few days. However, to avoid inconvenience, it is best to plan filler at least a few days before major work or social events.  Our office uses a vascular laser to zap any unsightly bruises that develop making downtime even less of an issue.  That is usually performed the day after the procedure if needed.  In addition, makeup and skin care products for the first 2 days post filler should be brand new or in a pump bottle to make sure home products that may have bacterial contamination are not applied on the filler injection sites.

Am I a Good Candidate for Dermal Fillers?

Hyaluronic dermal fillers are one of the most widely used aesthetic treatments. They are FDA-approved and safe for almost anyone. Good candidates for treating facial volume loss have reasonable expectations. People with certain health problems or an infection in the treatment area may not be good candidates.

“I have been seeing Dr. Krauss for probably eight years and my boys all see other doctors in the practice. They are thorough, nice, timely, have a great staff, and really keep our skin looking great. If you are curious about cosmetic procedures they offer everything under the sun and never push you to do things. Highly recommended.” *
