How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser light removes hair by traveling through the outer layers of skin to target the hair follicles. The laser targets the pigments in the root and regenerative lower portion of the follicle, destroying its ability to grow a hair

How Effective is Laser Hair Removal?

With the correct number of treatments, laser hair removal can leave you hair-free. The effectiveness of laser hair removal makes it a popular treatment for men and women who want to stop waxing, shaving, or threading. On certain areas, like underarms and bikini area, permanent hair reduction is ilkely.  In other hormonal influenced areas like the upper lip of women, maintenance treatment will likely be needed.

Am I a Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

The best candidates for laser hair removal have lighter skin (Fitzpatrick Scale I-III) and darker hair. We will assess your skin tone during your consultation to determine if you will make a good candidate. Your safety is our priority!

People with pale blond, red, gray or white hair do not usually make good candidates for laser hair removal. If you have very fair hair, you may not have enough pigment in your hair roots for the laser to destroy them and stop hair growth.

How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Will I Need?

Hair grows in cycles, with some follicles active and others resting. You will need enough treatments to catch hair follicles as they become active again. With each treatment, you will see less hair regrowth. Most people need five to twelve sessions for the best results

Preparing for Laser Hair Removal

We recommend taking these steps before each hair removal session to make sure you see the best results and prevent any blisters or thermal injury to the skin.

  • Avoid waxing or any other method that pulls out the hair root (you can still shave) for at least 6 weeks before your treatment
  • Keep the treated area protected from the sun and do not tan for at least a month before and after each treatment
  • Stop bleaching hair at least four weeks before treatment
  • Shave a few days before treatment, but not the same day

These steps can make sure your laser hair removal gets optimal results. They also keep your skin safe from potential injury.

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost?

At Krauss Dermatology, we provide pricing estimates based on the size of the treatment area. An area like the upper lip would cost $150 while the legs cost $600 per treatment. Your total cost will depend on the number of treatments you need which varies from person to person.
